A thyroidectomy specimen of the patient reveals a 2.5 mm, poorly defined tumor nodule with focal infiltrative borders. The tumor cells are relatively uniform with moderately eosinophilic cytoplasm, and round to slightly irregular nuclei with open chromatin (1A and inset). The tumor cells show strong reactivity to calcitonin immunohistochemical staining (1B).
